FEMA, Federal Emergency Management Agency, is updating the current Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) for all of Maine. FEMA states "The purpose of this effort is to provide your community with updated flood hazard risk information that can be utilized for mitigation actions and planning in order for your community to become more resilient to flood hazards."

Proposed changes may affect your property resale values and your insurance requirements if your property is within the flood zone. For those of you who have previously obtained LoMA's (Letter of Map Amendments) and now find yourself within a flood plain, it may be very important to obtain flood insurance prior to teh effective date of the new maps (90 days after June 11, 2014). Your insurance rates may be significantly reduced by doing so. There are preliminary maps available for review and the 90 day review window began on June 11, 2014.

We at Town Hall are not experts on the issue and are not able to address issues you may have.
