Coastal Recycling accepts colored glassDuring a recent regular meeting of the Coastal Recycling Board, directors voted unanimously to expand the facility's program to include colored glass, effective immediately.
Previously, only clear glass items were accepted at the facility
because of an unfavorable market for mixed-color glass. The value of
mixed glass in the recycling market place remains relatively low, but
the facility manager proposed a creative alternative that should
benefit all member towns. Since the Maine Department of Environmental
Protection does not restrict the use of crushed glass in landscaping or
construction projects that require the use of fill, the ficility will
offer the material at no cost to residents or businesses for such
projects. Lids should still be removed from all glass containers and it
should be noted that porcelain materials will not be accepted.
To discuss
options for using crushed glass in your landscaping and construction
projects or for other information regarding the expanded program,
contact Joyce Levesque, Coastal Recycling Manager, at 422-6766.
The facility is located on Route 182 in Hancock and does close for all major holidays.
